Other Composers of Special Interest
and their works played in the Deià Festival

One of the distinguishing features of the Festival Internacional de Deia is the exploration of seldom heard Classical, Romantic, and Post-Romantic composers, as well as some of the more accesible contemporary music.
In the 1999 season, for instance, we heard the two piano quintets of Ernö von Dohnányi, a delightful surprise for listeners unacquainted with his music. Long musical lines, beautiful melody, distinctive harmony and strong rhythmic impulse. The audiences - the pieces were played on different dates the first by a group from Berlin, the other by a group from Munich.
Here are some of the composers featured over the years:

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)
Piano Trio
Piano Quintet
Nonet - Piano, Strings, Winds

 Franz Berwald (1796-1868)
Piano Trio
Piano Quartet with Winds
Piano Quintet with Strings
Sonata for Violin and Piano
Intimuus
Perpetuum Manuel Castillo, born in Seville, studied piano and composition in Madrid, and later in Paris. In 1959 he won the National Music Prize. His work draws on French music and on the Spanish nationalist manner (especially Sevillian regionalism), a continuation of the work of Turina. Among composers of his generation he is the leading exponent of this tradition, and has had an important influence on younger Andalusian musicians.

Piano Quintet, Nº 1, Op. 1
Piano Quintet, Nº 2, Op. 26

Dohnányi was one of the great pianists of all history, according to the Grove Dictionary of Music. He was one of the first to recognize Bartok as a great composer. He was director of the Budapest Conservatoire until Nazi sympathizers forbade Jewish musicians to teach or play in the symphony, when he left for Vienna, then Switzerland, and finally, by way of Argentina arrived in the United States. Until his death during a recording in New York at the age of 87, he was teaching in the Florida State University at Tallahassee, Florida.
He followed the great Romantic tradition throughout his life, but with his own vivacity and humor.

Piano Quintet

George Chadwick gained success very young with his String Quartet Nº 2 and his overture Rip Van Winkle. He then studied in Munich with Rheinberger. Returning to the United States he soon became the director of the New England Conservatory. He was of rural stock, a high- school dropout, and a vagabond scholar, and was hardly a stereotype. In his best works he was a pioneer in freeing American music from German conservatory style. After popularity before the onset of World War I, he fell into neglect when musical fashion changed in favor of the younger Americans of the 1920´s.

He was one of the first French composers of the last century to cultivate absolute music, and was one of the founders of the Société Nationale de Musique. The Opus 6 violin sonata is dedicated to his friend E.M. Delaborde.
Castillon definitely has his own voice, and when you have heard his six songs for voice and piano, you will hear his signature phrases in all the other pieces. He has haunting themes hidden in the midst of the bombast of the epoch.

Amy Beach (1867-1924)
Sonata for Violin and Piano
Trio for Violin, Cello, pianoAmy Beach was a child prodigy pianist, making her debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1885, and during the next two years she played the Moscheles Piano Concerto, the Chopin F Minor Concerto, and the Mendelssohn, with the Boston and the Theodore Thomas Orchestra. Her “Gaelic” Symphony was the first symphony composed by an American woman. She toured Europe between 1911 and 1914, playing her own piano concerto in Hamburg, Leipzig, and Berlin. Beach was a leading representative of the late 19th-century Romantic style cultivated by Chadwick, Foote and the Boston School. Though she was one of the first composers completely trained in the USA, she did not believe in an “Americanist” school, and drew inspiration from Brahms, Wagner, Debussy, as well as fellow-American MacDowell.

Arthur Foote (1853-1937)
Piano Quintet
Suite in E Major
Arthur Foote studied music at Harvard University, where he was director of the Harvard Glee Club. He was the first to earn a Master´s degree in music from Harvard, where his composition teacher was the prestigious composer, John Knowles Paine. He later studied piano and organ in Boston. Foote was the first important American composer completely educated in the United States, although his music still demonstrates the influence of Brahms. In his day, his music was described as “classic-romantic, gentlemanly, well made, and refined.”
Jaume Mas Porcel (1909-1993)
Songs and Piano music Jaume Mas i Porcel was born in Palma in 1909. After initiating his studies in Mallorca and continuing in Madrid, he received a scholarship to study in Paris, where he studied piano with Alfred Cortot, and harpsichord with Wanda Landowska. He returned to Mallorca to teach and give recitals. He was an accomplished pianist and pioneered the teaching of harpsichord in Spain. L’any 1930, tornà a Mallorca, i commençà una etapa d’intensa activitat concertística i pedagògica . Morí l’any 1993 a Alacant. Miguel Capllonch
-Ottaviano dei Petrucci to the Duke of Venice 1498

Named after the famous printer of musical scores, Ottaviano dei Petrucci (18 June 1466 - May 1539), the Petrucci Project is about digitalizing the wealth of music in libraries and archives around the world which was never published, or is long out of print, virtually inaccessible to most musicians.

Musicologists, students, and institutions are already scanning or photographing printed musical material, and entering data for manuscripts too fragile for lending or photocopying. Already many works have been transcribed with several of the powerful programs now available for notating and editing music, including Finale,Score, and Sibelius.

Soundpost Publishing has already edited many previously unpublished works, now available in hard copies or in PDF format. A partial list is below. For a more complete list with prices, contact meadows_patrick@yahoo.co.uk.
Among other works, these are avalable: the Six Quintets by Padre Soler for organ or harpsichord and string quartet, now available fromSheetMusicNow , a Piano Trio by W.W. Gilchrist, the piano music and lieder by the late Mallorcan composers Jaume Mas Porcel and Bernardo Torrandell, a Te Deum for coro y orquesta del compositor mallorquin/catalan Pedro Tintorer, as well as other music, in score and parts.

Another recent project is the Grosses Stücke for 2 pianos by Franz Liszt, based on Songs without Words by Mendelssohn. The work is dated 1834, and was first performed that year by Chopin and Liszt. This edition is based on the Manuscript at the Schiller-Goethe Archive in Weimar.

Alice Mary (White Meadows) Smith (1839-1884) wrote 4 piano quartets, of which I have engraved. Nº2 in E-flat, Nº 3 in D Major, and Nº 4 in G Minor. If I had to characterize the music in a few words, I would have to agree with a quote in Cobbett´s Survey of Chamber Music: “Her forms were always clear and her ideas free from eccentricity; her sympathies were evidently with the Classic rather than the Romantic school. There is something of Mendelssohn in the piano part.”

In 2009 I finished Arthur Foote’s Concerto in G Minor for Violoncello and orchestra.
